A friend has an 1861 half dollar that is different from anything I have seen. It has the shield on both sides with "Confederate States of America" on both sides. One side has "Half Dol". The other side has the date "1861". Has anyone heard of such a coin? Can you provide any information?

It is most likely a reproduction or souvenir coin. The CSA only produced 4 half dollars. J.W. Scott of n New York purchased the dies and made 500 restrikes like the original and 500 with his own obverse. The half dollar you described is different from any of the varieties from Scott or CSA.
