A former sailor on the Byrd is trying to join the VFW. He says that in the early 70's the ship forced a Russian submarine to surface. His DD-214 shows the Meritorious Unit Citation awarded to the ship.

He could be eligible for membership in the VFW under the "imminent danger" provision.

Can anyone verify that this, in fact, happened?
