6) In Paul Scott’s The Jewel in the Crown, Edwina Crane repeats “Nothing I could do,” (p. 66 and pp. 461-62), adding, “It’s taken me a long time” (p. 66). Daphne Manners later repeats the phrase, “Nothing I could do” (p. 469). What is meant by these statements? How might their responses relate to the August “risings” of 1942?
