I am in possession of a copy of a RAF Sergeant Engineer's Log- Book that refers to flights made on Sunderland Flying Boats of 461 Squadron RAAF, in 1942/43 period. Among other notable incidents, he records the following: 29 April 1943 at 04,40 hours flying in aircraft JM 676-attacked and destroyed a U Boat. The pilot was F/O Gipps. I can find no mention of this incident elsewhere. Also, on 15th August 1943 flying in aircraft JM 685; this Sunderland was itself attacked by six JU88's and was seriously damaged, making a forced landing beside the Silly Isles, near to its base in Poole Harbour. The pilot was Flt/Lt Davenport. Again, I can find no record of this incident. Is anyone able to assist me with this matter? The log-book owner is now in his 93rd year and confined to a Residential Home in Deal, Kent, UK.
