Christiaan Huygens


Christiaan Huygens
  (1629-1695) was an Dutch scientist and mathematician who is best known for his contributions to mathematics and physics.  his work in observational astronomy led to numerous discoveries of moons and deep sky objects.

In 1654, Huygens and his brother created one of the most powerful telescopes of their day.  Using this telescope Huygens made several notable discoveries.   Among these discoveries were: Saturn's moon Titan, the Orion Nebula, as well as several double stars and nebulae. 

Huygens is also known for his discovery that the rings of Saturn are comprised of rocks.
