William Herschel  (1738 - 1822) was an English astronomer who is best known for his discoveries of astronomical objects.

Herschel's most notable contribution to astronomy was his discovery of the planet Uranus in 1781.  He subsequently discovered Saturn moons Enceladus and Mimas and Uranus moons Oberaon and Titania.

Herschel is also known for several important discoveries about the properties and motions of objects of the solar system.  His experimentation with prisms led to the discovery of infrared radiation in 1800.
