Fate is the controlling influence that brings Romeo and Juliet together but also dooms their love.

Romeo calls himself, "fortune's fool" after he kills Tybalt. I think free choice is part of that, as his banishment as a result of this sets his (their) fate in motion.

I think that the missed messages about Juliet's "fake" death, as well serve to get across the idea of fate controlling events.
